About Chambers of Commerce - What is a Chamber?

Chambers of commerce are membership-based associations of employers and other business entities organized to meet the needs of their members and to enhance the economic vitality and quality of life in the markets they serve.

Membership is voluntary. The decision to join and maintain membership is driven by the perceived value of membership. Successful chambers closely monitor the needs of the business community and respond to them in a timely fashion. Chambers exist to help their members grow by creating marketing opportunities, controlling costs, gaining access to decision-makers, facilitating compliance with government laws and regulations, influencing public policy, and helping their members and community prepare for the future.

Chambers are increasingly complex organizations. Chambers are often involved in partnerships with other organizations and/or governments to pursue specific tasks such as attracting employers to the community, convention and visitor development, downtown revitalization, or workforce development.

Chambers of commerce are eligible for tax-exempt status as not-for-profit corporations under Section 501 (c) (6) of the IRS Code. However, not-for-profit does not mean that the organization should not operate like a business. The pricing of dues and other programs and services offered should allow the organization to maintain its fiscal integrity.

The Directors have the power to adopt rules on conducting the business of the Chamber. For a description of the expectations of a GHCC Director click here.
